Canadian poet and music giant Leonard Cohen dead at 82

Montreal-born poet, songwriter and artist Leonard Cohen has died at the age of 82.
Officials broke the news of his passing in a short statement on his Facebook page Thursday evening.
“It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music’s most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief. ”
Cohen was born in Westmount, Que., on Sept. 21, 1934.
He began his career in 1956 and has written a host of songs, including the “Hallelujah” and “Suzanne”.
Cohen has been inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame, as well as the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
He’s also a Companion of the Order of Canada, one of this country’s highest honours.
The 82-year-old leaves behind two adult children, son and musician Adam Cohen, and daughter Lorca.
