Man dies while in police custody in SE Calgary; ASIRT investigating

Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man died while in police custody in southeast Calgary.
Calgary police were called to a home on Abbercove Road SE in the community of Abbeydale around 9:23 p.m. on Saturday regarding a report of a break‑and‑enter involving a weapon.
The suspect ran off into the neighbourhood before officers arrived.
Police found the man nearby. When they tried to arrest him, he allegedly fought with officers and refused to follow commands.
At least one officer used a Conductive Energy Weapon. The man went into medical distress moments later and was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured.
ASIRT is now investigating and police say no further information will be released while the investigation is underway.
ASIRT investigates any incident involving police that ends in serious injury or death.
