Firefighters battle large blaze at industrial site

Investigators are looking into a large late night fire Monday at a pallet recycling shop in Erin Woods.

The fire department was called to the scene around 11:15 p.m. and as the first crew drew close, they immediately called a second alarm due to the amount of smoke and flames.

The fire was so large that 52 Street was shut down near 34 Avenue, and air quality teams were brought in to monitor the situation.

Eventually, crews were able to get the upper hand with the help of multiple aerial ladder trucks shooting massive amounts of water down from above.

“There is a vehicle in the vicinity we’re not sure how involved it was and why. Other than the investigators will be here — to have a better look at it and determine the cause of fire,” District Chief Brad Bogner said.

The main buildings on site were not damaged.

A firefighter was transported to hospital with a minor sprain to his ankle.
