Researchers want pieces of meteor that crashed in BC

CALGARY, AB. (NEWS 1130) – It looking like something out of a movie or the X-Files and now experts are turning to the public to help solve a mystery.

A University of Calgary researcher is asking for your help in finding pieces of a meteor that lit up the sky before crashing to earth in southeastern BC on Labour Day.

The meteor was seen by people across this province, Alberta, Saskatchewan and several states when it entered the Earth’s atmosphere as an incredible, bright fireball before it broke up into fragments.

University researchers have pieced together the approximate path of the meteor using video from the College of the Rockies in Cranbrook, among some other sources. They say the largest of the rare space rocks may have fallen into Kootenay Lake.

Professor Alan Hildebrand says they also have a preliminary estimate of where meteorites may be found on the east side of the lake.

Anyone running security or wildlife cameras in the area is being asked to pass on the video.

It’s believed the meteor landed near Kaslo.
