City of Calgary doesn’t do ‘windrows’

Whose job is it to clear the snow riffs left behind by plow crews? The City of Calgary is asking homeowners to do it while they’re shoveling sidewalks adjacent to their properties.
Manager of Roads Maintenance Bill Biench says crews try their best to prevent what it calls “windrows,” which are the snow piles plows leave behind when they’re clearing.
“Unless we actually do load in removal, the windrows will continue to exist in residential areas. We try not and go into residential areas unless it’s Priority 2 roadway and actually plow the snow to the side,” he said.
The city does send in crews if it looks like the windrow is taller than 30 centimeters and it’s making it hard for residents to enter their driveways. Workers will assess the situation and remove it if they need to.
