Pipeline supporters and protesters make voices heard in Calgary

Climate Justice Edmonton held a sit-in at the Kinder Morgan Office in Calgary Friday, to protest against the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion.

Organizers zip-tied themselves to the office doors while singing and talking about the project via Facebook live.

Spokesperson Hannah Gelderman told 660 NEWS the purpose was to disrupt business and call for a halt to the project.

“We want to send a warning to investors that this is risky. We can’t keep investing in this error of climate chaos; we can’t keep investing in fossil fuel expansion it makes it impossible to meet our climate targets.”

Gelderman adds they wanted to show people here in Alberta support those fighting in B.C.

“It’s important that there is messaging coming out of Alberta that we are ready for a transition that we oppose this project. We know that there is really loud voices along the route and especially in B.C. there’s resistance being led by many first nations and we wanted to stand in solidarity with those first nations.”

The protesters were placed under arrest by Calgary police following the nearly three-hour demonstration.

Elsewhere, pro-pipeline demonstrations by Canada Action and Rally 4 Resources were also held Friday in front of three federal MP’s offices, including Kent Hehr.
