Pandas bringing in record numbers to Calgary Zoo

It may have cost over $14 million to get them here but, so far, the returns for four giant pandas are great for the Calgary Zoo.

Spokesperson Lindsey Galloway says more than 190,000 people passed through the gates in May smashing the old record for that month of 147,000 set when it opened Destination Africa in 2003.

He says yearly memberships are up too.

“At the peak of our Penguin Plunge unveiling in 2012, which was a really great year for us, we had about 75,000 members. Today, we’ve got about 95,000 active members.”

Galloway anticipates more the 250,000 people per month over the summer, and says you can pre-book your Panda Passage time for free at the Calgary Zoo website, to make sure you get a spot to see the bears.
