Anders Evanson, 11, kicked off the grand opening of the Silver Springs Outdoor Pool on Saturday, taking the in inaugural jump off the new dive tower.
It’s an event the Calgary community has been working toward for five years.
Back in 2013, the City of Calgary wanted to replace the existing aging outdoor pool but, President of the Silver Springs Outdoor Pool Fundraising Foundation Cydney Elofson explains, it didn’t have a key element the community wanted.
“The original design that the City of Calgary had provided did not include any outdoor dive board, or dive tank or anything of that nature,” said Elofson.
The foundation was then formed and people began fundraising. Children donated money from lemonade stands and their birthday money, community events were held including a retro fitness fundraiser, fun run and a swim-a-thon. That’s when Evanson earned his grand opening honour.
“I was the top fundraiser of the swim-a-thon, the event we had a few years ago. Because I raised the most money I could be the first person to jump off the dive tower,” said Evanson, who raised over $1,300.
Not only does the outdoor pool boast a new dive tower, it also has a 33 metre lane pool and universal access ramp.
