‘Building Bridges’: Beakerhead gears up for 6th year

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A classic Calgary event is set to kick off for its sixth year with a “Building Bridges” theme: Beakerhead begins its five-day reign over the city on Wednesday.

This year, organizers dialled up the theme of connecting the worlds of art, science, and legends.

“There are different installations in different neighbourhoods–Marda Loop, downtown, Kensington–and it all culminates in the pinnacle event Beaker Night on Saturday at Fort Calgary,” said president and co-founder Mary Anne Moser.

“And in the meantime, there are about 50 other workshops, roll-up-your-sleeves-DIY things that you can do and explore!”

You will likely see some of the incredible pieces at Beaker Night even if you’re not in the Fort Calgary park, as this year’s focal point is a 20-foot “Sextant Tesla Coil” that shoots electricity across the sky.

“You’ll see interactive electronic flowers that you can put your hand on and they will pulse with your heartbeat,” explained Moser.

There’s also a stand-alone fashion show “Make Fashion” that Moser says attracts hundreds of people on its own.

“You will see Beaker Beer for the first time ever!”

Moser said there’s a Beaker Bar at which there will be the brew on tap, as well as a signature screwdriver, on Saturday night.

The event has grown considerably over the last few years, with “tens of thousands” expected to take in the festival. For more on what’s happening during the lead up to the big bach over the weekend, click here.
