Calgary man facing murder charges after brother-in-law fatally stabbed

A Calgary man has been arrested and charged with allegedly killing his brother-in-law with a kitchen knife at a bowling alley in Los Angeles County.

Forty-year-old Loi Vi Tran was charged Tuesday with one count of murder with the special circumstance of lying in wait, it’s a case that could make him eligible for the death penalty.

The charge also includes use of a deadly and dangerous weapon.

Tran was visiting southern California and is believed to have visited the El Monte bowling alley with extended family on Saturday.

The group played for several hours that night, he paid for everyone’s game before going outside to wait for them.

Prosecutors say it was after midnight when Tran stabbed his brother-in-law, 45-year-old Stephen Tran, in the chest after an exchange of words.

He was arrested at the scene. The victim was rushed to hospital where he later died.

According to the D.A.’s office, if convicted as charged, he faces the death in penalty, or life in state prison without the possibility of parole.

They are requesting that Tran’s bail be denied.

The case is still under investigation by the homicide bureau of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department.
