Alberta Doctors hope to influence vaccinations to stop influenza

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — It appears flu season in Alberta is slowing down, but health officials still want people to take the necessary precautions.

Since late August there have been over 4,600 infections in the province and 17 deaths. Calgary has been hit hard by the bug, seven of the 17 deaths have been in the city.

“We’ve basically been seeing a decline in the number of lab confirmed flu cases since around November and December, both in Calgary zone and across Alberta, so that’s very good,” said Dr. Jia Hu, medical officer of health for Calgary Zone.

Flu season doesn’t end until the Spring, so there could be another spike in cases.

“If you haven’t been immunized, it’s important to get immunized it’s the best way to be protected against the flu,” said Hu.

Hu added that only about 30 per cent of Albertans get immunized.

Last year, 92 people died in the province from the flu.
