Calgary police looking to tackle growing meth crisis

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – It’s becoming a growing concern for Calgary police after nearly 200 charges were laid for drug trafficking this week, mainly connected to methamphetamine.
Earlier this week, police released a report that showed meth seizures in the city have grown from 142 to 1,034 in the last five years.

As a result, police launched the Daylight Initiative.
“What we’re doing is really trying to improve, internally, our communication levels and support for our front line members that are dealing with methamphetamine on a daily basis,” said Inspector Kevin Forsen.
Forsen said that part of the initiative has been going on since December, where they’ve identified areas of the city that are very active for drug trafficking.

On Thursday, police announced they had charged 32 people with trafficking various drugs including cocaine, heroin and meth.
While other drugs are being found in Calgary, Forsen explains why meth is becoming increasingly popular.
“The supply is very, very high and the prices are very, very low so it’s become a very attractive drug for people to try. Unfortunately, it’s very addictive, once you try it, there’s a high likelihood that you’re going to become addicted to it.”
