Woman has life-altering injuries after being hit by garbage truck in downtown Calgary

A woman has sustained ‘life-altering’ injuries after being hit and run over by a garbage truck in downtown Calgary. Jillian Code reports.

A young woman has life-altering injuries after being hit by a garbage truck in downtown Calgary on Friday morning.

Emergency crews were called to 6 Avenue and 4 Street SE around 9:45 a.m. for reports of a crash involving a pedestrian.

Investigators say a garbage truck was heading northbound on 4 Street when it stopped at a red light. When the light turned green the truck attempted to turn left onto 6 Avenue just as a woman walked onto the road.

The woman in her teens was knocked to the ground and ran over after getting hit by the driver-side corner of the truck, according to police.

Paramedics say she was rushed to Foothills Medical Centre in life-threatening condition. Police later confirmed she suffered life-altering injuries and remains in hospital in critical condition.

The garbage truck driver stayed on scene and was not hurt.

The intersection of 6 Avenue and 4 Street SE was closed for several hours, but reopened shortly before 3 p.m.

Police continue to investigate the cause of the crash but say impairment or speed are not considered factors.

City sees multiple pedestrian, vehicle incidents in recent weeks

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) says there was a record number fatal traffic collisions in 2024.

CPS Traffic Unit Staff Sgt. Andy Woodward says 2025 isn’t off to a great start.

“Last year, in 2024, we had more fatalities than we’ve ever had,” he said. “Unfortunately, at the start of this year, — we’re only two weeks into it — and we’ve got two fatalities.

“I do not want that trend to continue.”

Calgary has seen several pedestrian and vehicle collisions so far in January, the most recent of which killed a 17-year-old girl.

Last week, on Jan. 10, two people were left in critical but stable condition after being hit by a car in the parking lot of the Grey Eagle Casino in the southwest. Police are still looking for the vehicle responsible.

The day before, on Jan. 9, a man in his 60s was hit by a pickup truck in the northeast and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries. He later died.

The last days of 2024 were met with similar incidents — a man in his 50s died when he was hit by a truck downtown on Dec. 30.
