Calgary Inferno begin Clarkson Cup weekend with awards night

TORONTO (660 NEWS) — Ahead of Sunday’s Clarkson Cup featuring the Calgary Inferno and Montreal Les Canadiennes, the Canadian Women’s Hockey League will be handing out some hardware Friday night in Toronto.

The Inferno have a nominee in every category at this year’s CWHL awards, indicative of the team’s first-place finish in the regular season standings.

Rebecca Leslie – Rookie of the Year
Kacey Bellamy – Defender of the Year
Alex Rigsby – Goaltender of the Year
Brianne Jenner – Jayna Hefford Trophy (players-voted MVP)
Rebecca Johnston – CWHL MVP
Ryan Hilderman – Coach of the Year

The awards show tees up a busy weekend for the Inferno, which includes a community day on Saturday.

The championship game is slated for 10 a.m. Sunday on Sportsnet West. The Inferno are looking for their second Clarkson Cup, and the team is taking part in the CWHL final for the third time in four seasons.

“We have to control the puck,” explained Calgary’s Brianne Jenner, who won the championship in 2016. “We are a puck possession team. That has been our identity all year. We don’t want to dump and chase. We like to control the play, and we like to be in their face. If we can play with that confidence, have strong puck management throughout the game, we’ll put ourselves in a good position.”

The Inferno are hosting a watch party Sunday.
