Cost of 17 Ave construction jumps to $52-million

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The price tag for the work along 17 Ave. appears to have sky-rocketed.

660 NEWS has learned the project, which was originally projected to cost $44-million has jumped to $52-million.

In an email, the City says due to the complexity of the project, working within the tight space, and ensuring Calgarians and visitors can continue to enjoy the avenue, the project has had to remain flexible.

Consequently, the budget has been increased by approximately 18 per cent.

Crews are hoping to have the work along 17 Ave. between Macleod Tr. and 14 St. done by the end of this year, but they say there may be some sidewalk work that will continue into 2020.

Businesses in the area have complained the work has greatly impacted their bottom-lines.
