Pair of coyotes and at least nine pups move into Arbour Lake

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — The City of Calgary is warning Arbour Lake residents about a group of coyotes that denned in the community.
Two adults and at least nine pups have made themselves comfortable behind a hill and under a pile of rocks along Arbour Lake Drive, near Arbour Vista Hill.
The city has fenced off the area with orange temporary fencing and police tape to keep the curious pups safe.
Chris Manderson the Urban Conservation Lead with Calgary Parks said judging by the size of the pups, they’ve been there for three or four weeks.
“The really important thing is please give them space. They’re behaving normally, mom is being defensive as she should be, getting close isn’t going to help the situation we don’t want to stress the animals out,” said Manderson.
He adds that coyotes could move their dens two to three times a year.
“They may be here for a little while and our hope is that they may move on to a more secluded spot,” Manderson said. “This is coyotes doing what coyotes do, this is the breeding season for them, you would expect to see puppies this time of year.”
Manderson adds that moving the animals isn’t an option as the Province of Alberta doesn’t allow it for a number of reasons, including potential disease transmission and that it doesn’t work well for the animals.
