Woman dies after falling from Calgary building surrounded by police

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A woman is dead after falling over a fifth-floor balcony while Calgary police were attempting to make an arrest at an Eau Claire apartment building early Wednesday morning.

Police say they arrested a man outside the building on 1st Street Southeast near Riverfront Avenue in relation to a shooting investigation and learned a woman, who was also wanted in the investigation, was still inside.

Officers surrounded the apartment and encouraged the woman to surrender, but at some point, she went over the railing.

She was rushed to hospital in critical condition where she later died.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is leading the investigation because it happened while police were acting on a search warrant.

However, ASIRT says officers had no physical contact with the woman.

Those officers are considered witnesses and will remain on duty.
