Plainclothes officers arrest thieves outside Chinook Centre

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Plainclothes officers arrested a man and woman in the Chinook Centre parking lot Monday evening, following an alleged assault and a vehicle theft.

Several uniformed and undercover officers apprehended the suspects around 5:30 p.m.

“The stolen vehicle was stopped near Chinook mall and two people were taken into custody, and one of the people inside the vehicle was also responsible for an assault,” said Insp. Melanie Oncescu with Calgary Police Service.

The man and woman were not identified by police, but Oncescu told 660 NEWS that the man was responsible for the assault.

“The offender in this situation was responsible for attempting to steal something from a local business, and when approached by a loss prevention officer, they assaulted the loss prevention officer and fled the scene,” she added.

When police ran checks on the suspects’ vehicle, it turns out it was stolen.

Police informed the owner of the vehicle that they located their car.

Charges have not been formally laid yet.
