Cannabis edibles could take time before coming to Calgary

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – As the first anniversary of cannabis legalization approaches, Calgary is preparing for new products to enter the market.

The new products include edibles, extracts and topicals and will become legal on Oct. 17.

However, many of the products will take time before they can be for sale in Calgary and Alberta.

A spokesperson with the AGLC said you can expect the edible products to be in stores by early-to-mid January.

“Most likely there will be a limited number of products available initially, as licensed producers (LPs) determine market demand. All cannabis products sold in Alberta, including EETs, will come from the LPs we have contracts with. Currently, we are working with 33 LPs and are always looking to work with more. We have no issues with supply and have issued 306 retail licences (as of Oct. 15, 2019), which is very close to the 250 we had estimated for year one,” the spokesperson said.

Federally licensed producers must get approval from Health Canada to produce the products, and authorized distributors and retailers need time to receive them. It’s expected they’ll be available for sale no earlier than mid-December 2019.

“As cannabis edibles become available, we’d like to remind Calgarians that in Calgary, cannabis may be consumed on private property or in designated festival/event areas in any form, including smoking, vaping or edibles,” said Matt Zabloski, The City of Calgary’s project lead for the legalization of cannabis.

Zabloski reiterated that consuming recreational cannabis is prohibited in Calgary’s public places.

The new cannabis products will be available through Alberta’s existing retail system at AlbertaCannabis.org or licensed cannabis stores.
