Tiny homes community for veterans officially opens

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – A unique community to support Armed Forces veterans has been unveiled in southeast Calgary.

Homes for Heroes’ ATCO Village officially opened Monday and is providing 15 tiny homes to military veterans.

Eleven veterans are set to move into the community this week as they transition to life back home.

“As you come back to Canada in this case and see yourself, maybe more vulnerable, I would think it would be extremely difficult for the average soldier to ask for help,” said Don McLeod with the Mustard Seed.

The local non-profit will manage the property and provide mentoring, case management and counselling to veterans.

“We’re going to use the experts at The Mustard Seed to facilitate different things like employment opportunities, if they have medical issues, we’re going to point them in the right direction as well,” said McLeod.

The community will have 24-hour security, a resource centre, counsellor’s office, family suite, and community garden. The 300-square-foot homes feature all the necessities, including a bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, and living room space.

The Homes for Heroes Foundation is also planning to open a similar community in Edmonton next year.
