Does your CO alarm work? CFD says now is the time to check

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The Calgary Fire Department says now is the time of year when people should be checking to see if your carbon monoxide alarms are working.

It’s Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week and the CFD is urging you to check up on household alarms.

The department also says there’s a reason it rolls out the awareness campaign when the temperature begins to drop.

“We do see an increase in calls during the colder months,” explains Carol Henke with the CFD. “We attend approximately 2,000 carbon monoxide calls a year.”

She notes there are many false alarms, but that can serve as a reminder to check your detector to make sure it’s working properly.

“One thing a lot of people don’t realize is you should actually be vacuuming them off with a fuzzy brush because the dust that’s in our air does collect there. And same with smoke alarms.”

Henke says you should be checking your carbon monoxide detector monthly and change the battery every year.
