High court denies appeals in Calgary swarming death

CALGARY(660 NEWS) — The Supreme Court of Canada has denied appeals from two men convicted in the swarming death of a young man outside a Calgary bar.

In 2013, 18-year-old Lukas Strasser-Hird was kicked and stabbed to death by a group of men in an alleyway behind the night club.

Four men have been found guilty in the case, but two of them, Franz Cabrera and Assmar Shlah, appealed, arguing their second-degree murder convictions were unreasonable.

The Supreme Court dismissed both appeals Friday, just hours after the cases were heard.

Nathan Gervais was convicted of first-degree murder in the case, while Joch Pouk was found guilty of manslaughter.

Gervais went on trial earlier this year, after he was tracked down in Vietnam and brought back to Calgary to face charges.
