More jobs cut, select open positions won’t be filled at MRU

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – On top of five positions eliminated on Monday, another five jobs have been cut in Mount Royal’s Academic Affairs, Finance, and University Advancement departments.

Another 10 to 15 vacant positions will not be filled according to the university.

In an email to staff, the school says no more job cuts are expected this year but there will inevitably be more cuts coming in 2020.

About 70 per cent of MRU’s operating costs come from salaries and benefits and it cannot reduce costs in other areas to close the gap in the 2019-2020 budget.

Further, it’s exploring way to reduce administrative costs and discretionary expenditures; make building repairs only in emergency situations; fill vacancies only when necessary; and look for ways to increase revenue in other areas.

MRU says these decisions are never easy and encourages managers to work with their teams to manage workloads and to continue to submit ideas on how to reduce costs.
