Fire in Forest Lawn leaves several people without a home

Fire in Forest Lawn displaces over a dozen people. As Allie Miller reports, 16 people were forced from their apartment building Wednesday.

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – More than a dozen people were forced from their homes Wednesday night after a fire in Forest Lawn.

Crews arrived at a townhouse complex on Fonda Way near 39 St. SE around 11 p.m.

Carol Henke with the fire department said they don’t know what caused the fire and what warning people had when it ignited.

“At this point, we’re not sure if there were working smoke alarms. It’s just a reminder to everyone to ensure that you have working smoke alarms because once a fire takes hold, that’s what’s gonna let you know that you need to get out quickly.”

Firefighters put out flames on the outside of the homes and made their way to the first floor of a townhouse where they extinguished another fire.

Atco and Enmax arrived shortly after and shut down power and gas.

The fire department said 16 people were safely evacuated and sheltered in a Calgary Transit bus.

“All occupants of the townhouse units have been allowed back in with the exception of the suite of origin because of the damage from the fire. That family has not been allowed back in,” said Henke.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
