Popular Kensington bar closes permanently due to COVID-19

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Another popular bar in Kensington has announced it’s closing for good.

The Oak Tree Tavern, on 10 Street northwest, said the current state in the midst of COVID-19 has made it impossible to stay in business.

“After 8 years, we are sad to announce that we have permanently closed our doors,” the Tavern said on Facebook. “We would like to thank our loyal patrons and supporters. We will miss you greatly.”

The announcement came not long after Kensington’s Midtown Kitchen & Bar also revealed it is permanently closing.

Midtown had been a part of the Kensington community for six years and said the shutdown due to COVID-19 and difficulty with landlords forced them to close for good.

These bars are not the only establishments feeling the weight of the COVID-19 impact.

A survey released Thursday by Restaurants Canada believes one out of every two independant restaurants could close permanently if more government support isn’t given.

The group wants an immediate moratorium on evictions and lock-outs for commercial tenants, adequate rent assistance and measures that continue until the economy recovers.
