Fees for extra garbage bags begin next month

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Starting next month, you’ll have to pay more to put out extra trash on collection day.

As of Oct. 1, the City of Calgary will be charging $3 for bags that don’t fit in your black cart.

City Council approved the Tag-a-Bag program back in April 2019 and was supposed to take effect in June, but was delayed because of the pandemic.

The tag-a-bag program costs are anticipated to be recovered through the sale of tags.

Instead of increasing the Black Cart program charge as planned in the 2020 budget, we are able to hold the Black Cart program charge at the 2019 rate as a result of the tag-a-bag program

Officials estimate around eight to 15 per cent of material thrown into blue bins should not be there in the first place, and it has to be sorted out at extra cost.

The City estimates that only four per cent of homes put out extra garbage on collection day.

Garbage tags can be purchased online and at Calgary Co-Op and Circle K stores.
