CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Training for guide dogs had been shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but now some puppies are getting special training thanks to a partnership with Calgary Transit.
Sandra Cramer with BC and Alberta Guide Dogs said she is happy to be getting back into regular training sessions with the dogs.
“The really nice thing about this is that we are able to do this is a nice and slow way so that if some of our dogs are nervous about being in the enclosed bus we can take our time.”
“Just get them used to the motion, the sounds, the air brakes so that they are just relaxed and comfortable.”
Acting Director of Calgary Transit, Russel Davis said this will help make transit more accessible in the future.
“There is a lot of people that depend on Calgary Transit, a lot of people depend on guide dogs on Calgary Transit so we got the opportunity to expose them to these fairly big and intimidating and noisy vehicles is just a great chance to give back to the community again.”
BC and Alberta Guide Dogs added they are interested in recruiting more volunteers to help train the dogs.
