Canadian Premier League set for thrilling final group stage matches

CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI (660 NEWS) – Canadian Premier League finals will be determined on Tuesday, following a Cavalry FC loss to the HFX Wanderers.

Cavalry FC started the match with an early challenge after defender Jay Wheeldon was given his second yellow of the match, taking down an HFX attacker in the 18-yard box.

The early departure for Wheeldon was quickly met with the Cavalry needing to find an equalizer, as Garcia – who was awarded a penalty – narrowly beat keeper Marco Carducci.

Nearing half the Cavalry found themselves in a large hole, as Carducci was given a yellow card following a challenge in the 18-yard box, which gave the Wanderers their second penalty shot of the half.

Morelli Neto with ease found the back of the net, doubling the Wanderers lead.

The Cavalry added a little dramatic flare near the end of the match as Cordova Carpio capitalized on a rebound, bringing the Cavalry back within one.

However, after intense pressure, the Cavalry could not find the desperately need equalizer.

With the victory, the Wanderers slot themselves into the second position of the group stage, level with Hamilton’s Forge FC on points but trailing on goal difference.

With the loss, the Cavalry fall to an unfamiliar position, outside of safety with the risk of being sent home.

Tuesday, the Cavs will meet Forge in a must win meeting, a very familiar spot for the Canadian Premier League’s most intense rivalry.

The duo has met in ten matches since the Canadian Premier League’s inauguration, more than any other team, including a thrilling Canadian Championship and the 2019 Final.

HFX Wanderers will meet the already eliminated Pacific FC, who dropped both their Group Stage meetings with Cavalry and Forge. Wanderers will advance to the 2020 Finals with a win or tie.
