Man charged in fatal hookah lounge shooting

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — A 28-year-old man has been charged after a fatal shooting in southeast Calgary last weekend.

On Sept. 12, shortly before 3 a.m., police were called to reports of a shooting outside the Portico Hookah Lounge on 35 Street in the community of Southview.

Investigators believe two groups of men caused a disturbance inside the lounge and were asked to leave. Once outside, the dispute escalated, and shots were fired, with two men injured.

One victim fled the scene with other witnesses, but their car collided with LRT barricades just south of the lounge at 36 Street and 26 Avenue. The man was rushed to hospital by EMS but died from his injuries.

Police were able to quickly identify a suspect, and on Monday, they arrested without incident at a residence in downtown Calgary on charges of second-degree murder.

CCTV footage is still being reviewed, and investigators are confident further charges will be laid against more people. They also believe several others witnessed the confrontation and are asking them to come forward.
