Province expands forest closure due to fire west of Calgary

BIGHORN (660 NEWS) – Alberta has expanded a forest closure west of Calgary as firefighters continue to battle an out-of-control wildfire.

The Devil’s Head Fire, west of the Waiparous area, has been burning out of control since early Tuesday when strong winds whipped up the flames.

The province reports more than 100 firefighters are involved with eight helicopters and one air tanker dropping water, mostly on the eastern edge of the fire.

There are 16 pieces of heavy equipment working to establish a fireguard on the north end of the fire.

The wildfire, which was sparked by an abandoned campfire in early September, is still around 3,600 hectares in size, but the province notes that not all of those areas burn due to rocky terrain.
