Calgary mayor says Alberta could see 1,000 COVID-19 cases per day by end of week

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Calgary’s mayor says Alberta is on track to see more than 1,000 new COVID-19 cases a day by the end of the week.
Speaking outside of city hall, Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he knows the numbers that will be released by Dr. Deena Hinshaw Tuesday afternoon and he is extremely concerned.
“We are on track as a province to having 1,000 new cases a day as soon as the end of this week.”
“And so this is extraordinarily troubling. We’re not just above where we were in the spring, we are far above where we were in the spring.”
He says the potential COVID-19 vaccine has not arrived yet and it could be months before Alberta sees one.
“We need to redouble our efforts to avoid a lockdown. We need to redouble our efforts to look after one another and to flatten this curve again.”
He says the steps to flatten the curve have not changed and Calgarians should be doing their best to physical distance themselves and to maintain COVID-19 protocol.
Nenshi says if a lockdown is the only way to put an end to the pandemic in the province, then that’s what we need to do.
There hasn’t been a COVID-19 update for the province since Friday, when Alberta confirmed the single-day record of 622 cases.
