Nearly 20 years later, former teacher now charged with sexual assault

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Police have laid charges against a former junior high school teacher relating to a series of alleged sexual assaults 20 years ago.

Police said the first offence was reported to them in September 2020 when a woman said her teacher at John Ware Junior High School had undressed her and other female students during a canoe trip not sanctioned by the school.

While investigating this case, the Sex Crimes Unit said five other women reported being sexually involved with the same teacher from 1999 to 2005.

The teacher, Michael Gregory, taught at John Ware Junior High School from August 1986 until September 2006.

“There can be a lot of confusion and mixed emotions when a young person experiences exploitation by someone they trusted,” said S/Sgt. Michelle Doyle. “It can often take many years before the person looks back on it and realizes that what happened was not okay and that it needs to be reported.”

Gregory now faces 17 charges of sexual assault and sexual exploitation.

Police said the investigation into these assaults is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call Calgary police or Crime Stoppers.
