Thousands lose power in Calgary after disruption at Alberta, B.C. border

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – Power line disruptions between B.C. and Alberta are being blamed for an outage that affected thousands in Calgary Sunday night.

Power to about 18,000 customers went out for close to 20 minutes in several neighbourhoods throughout the city including Hillhurst, Shawnessy, Silver Springs and Fish Creek Park.

According to the Alberta Energy Systems Operator (AESO), the province experienced a “frequency disturbance on the power system that caused built-in safeguards to trip power to some areas of the province.”

In a statement, the AESO said at no time was Alberta in an Energy Emergency Alert situation like what happened in Texas and parts of the southern United States last week.

The power troubles didn’t stop there as early Monday morning, thousands of customers in Montgomery and Varsity experienced another minor outage.

Enmax has since restored power in those neighbourhoods.
