Sunday’s update didn’t bring much comfort for Albertans hoping to see progress in the fight against COVID-19, as the province registered a rise in the number of ICU patients

CALGARY (CityNews) — The daily COVID-19 update had little good news for Albertans looking for a sign of progress.

Variants of concern accounted for 800 of the 1,516 new cases in the province.

The positive results are from 15,343 tests, giving a positivity rate of 9.8 per cent – a jump from the 9.2 per cent reported Saturday.

Other indicators of where the province sits in the third wave are also on the rise as hospitalizations increased to 451.

Nine more patients were transferred to intensive care treatment for COVID-19, bringing the provincial total above 100, to 103.

There are 17,935 cases active in Alberta, with 7,879 in the Calgary zone and 4,788 in Edmonton.

Three more deaths have also been reported, bringing the number of lives lost in the province to 2,040.

The province has administered 1,147,048 doses of COVID-19 vaccine.
