Alberta identifies 1,799 new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations continue to climb

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Alberta identified 1,799 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday bringing the province’s active case count to 24,962.
The newly identified cases come after 17,534 completed tests, giving the province a positivity rate of 10.3 per cent.
Hospitalizations continue to rise in Alberta with 737 people now in hospital, a 37 person increase from Tuesday, including 169 people now in the ICU.

Four additional deaths were reported on Wednesday.
As for regional cases, Fort McMurray regained the top spot on the list of active infections per 100,000 people.

As for vaccines, 27,931 doses were administered over the last day, pulling the province closer to reaching 2 million doses administered.
The total vaccine count as of Wednesday afternoon was nearing 1.98 million.
Thirty-seven per cent of Alberta’s population has received at least one dose of vaccine, with just over seven per cent having received two doses.

The vaccine regional breakdown shows 40 per cent of people in the Edmonton Zone have received their first dose, with the South and Calgary Zones at 37 per cent.
The Central Zone is 33.8 per cent inoculated, while the North Zone sits at 28.2 per cent.
