Calgary police relaunch ‘9 p.m. Routine’ after more than 24,000 car prowlings, break and enters in last year

    Calgary Police has re-launched the 9 p.m. routine in the city due to an increase in seasonal crime trends.

    CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Calgary police are re-launching the 9 p.m. Routine following a large number of car prowlings and break and enters over the last year.

    In total, there were more than 24,000 car prowlings and break and enters from March 2020 to March 2021.

    Police are hoping as the weather warms up and more people are out at night, that Calgarians can implement the 9 p.m. Routine into their nightly schedules to keep themselves and their belongings safe.

    The routine recommends removing valuables from your car or any personal information that can be stolen and used fraudulently and ensuring all car doors are locked.

    It also includes doing a check of the house to make sure garages, windows, doors are all closed and locked for the night.

    Police also recommend you turn on an exterior light in an effort to keep prowlers from targeting your home.

    “Car prowlers usually count on crimes of opportunity and will repeatedly check car doors in parkades, parking lots and on streets for ones that are unlocked, especially if there’s valuable items in plain view,” says Sergeant Nick Wilsher in a release. “We are encouraging citizens to always lock their vehicles, even if parked at home, and to remove all personal items every night.”

    The breakdown of the numbers for the last year show 4,396 break and enters, with 1,791 being residential, and the remaining 2,605 being listed as “other” which could include sheds, garages, etc.

    Of these incidents:

    • 1,043 took place during the day
    • 2,140 were at night
    • 1,123 happened during an undetermined time frame

     

    Meanwhile, the car prowling numbers made up the majority of the incidents, with nearly 20,000 car prowlings since last March.

    Of those incidents:

    • 4,724 happened during the day
    • 7,541 happened at night
    • 7,419 happened during an undetermined time period
