Stampede won’t look the same, but will be COVID-19 safe: Nenshi

CALGARY — Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi says while the Stampede is set to go July 9, it won’t look like the festival of years past.
Nenshi says there will be changes and rules to keep people safe from COVID-19 as much as possible.
His comments come a day after Premier Jason Kenney announced an aggressive reopening plan tied to vaccination rates that could see life returning to normal by the end of June.
Kenney says one reward for such an accomplishment is the Stampede.
However, Stampede officials have announced that the chuckwagon races, the star attraction of the event, won’t go ahead this year.

Officials say the riders have not had a chance to compete recently and it would be dangerous for them, and for the horses, to go from no competition straight into high-stakes racing in Calgary.
