CALGARY – Some university students can expect to make a return to in-person instruction for the fall semester as the province looks to move into a post-pandemic world.
The University of Calgary said its decision to welcome people back to its campuses was based on the latest provincial health guidelines.
The school added, however, that vaccination is a critical part of enabling a return to in-person classes.
“We have hit some significant milestones in terms of public vaccination. As the number of vaccinated people grows, health guidelines around physical distancing and public gatherings can finally ease. This is what enables us to safely begin moving back to campus for the fall,” said U of C president and vice-chancellor Dr. Ed McCauley.
Students and staff will be welcomed back in a staggered, gradual return, which is still being mapped out.
The school says U of C’s population should watch out for more specific details on the return over the summer, and remain flexible in case the COVID-19 situation in Alberta changes between now and the fall.
The school’s student union says its cautiously optimistic about the return to in-person learning.
“Students generally want to return to class and campus to get the full university experience. The SU believes this must be done cautiously, safely, and in close contact with Alberta Health Services. Student safety is our top priority and we will bring forward any student concerns to do with a return to in-person classes,” reads a statement from the union.
“Our expectation is that the university do all it can, especially in the fall semester, to accommodate students who may not be comfortable or able to return to class.”
