PipeDiver assessment of Bearspaw South Feeder Main sucessful: City of Calgary

A PipeDiver assessment of the steel portion of Calgary’s Bearspaw South Feeder Main was completed after a previous test in April failed.

The PipeDiver was relaunched on April 28 and collected data over a two-kilometre section of the pipe.

The same test was attempted on April 13, but the robotic device malfunctioned as soon as it began, leading the city to haul the PipeDiver back before trying again. Despite the setback, the city stresses that water service is stable and no restrictions are expected.

The city said the assessment was a success on Friday.

“The PipeDiver test was conducted on Tuesday morning without issue, after which the robot and recovery net were retrieved from the pipe,” a notice from the city reads.

“We began refilling the feeder main on Wednesday afternoon, and once full, all necessary water samples were collected. Water quality results came back on Thursday without concern, and the feeder main has been returned to service.”

Officials say it’ll be about a month until the city receives the results, which will inform future plans for the pipe.

The inspection is intended to assess the condition of the existing feeder main, which has experienced multiple breaks in recent years, most recently in late December.
