Calgary under air quality advisory due to smoky skies

Calgary is under an air quality advisory after smoke moved into the city Monday afternoon.

Environment Canada says conditions may worsen as the smoke lingers over Alberta for the next couple of days.

The smoke is being pushed south by the same system that brought heavy rain to the region.

“The very same low-pressure centre that drove in a large amount of rain is now curling smoke from north Saskatchewan right on top of us,” says 660 NewsRadio meteorologist Kevin Stanfield.

Stanfield says some northwest Calgary neighbourhoods are seeing particulate levels above 100 ppm, equivalent to an air quality index rating of 10 plus.

The air quality advisory stretches west of Calgary and north through Edmonton to Fort McMurray.

Calgary’s current Air Quality Health Index sits at six, a moderate risk, but forecasters expect conditions to deteriorate later tonight and into Tuesday. People with respiratory issues are urged to reconsider outdoor activities.
