Canada Day festivities happening across Calgary

Canada Day celebrations are happening across the country on Wednesday, and there are plenty of ways to kick off the 159th year in Calgary.

The City of Calgary’s Canada Day celebration takes place throughout downtown, where live performances, cultural activities and fun across parks, plazas and riverfront spaces are expected to take place.

There’s also a free shuttle service travelling to the Beltline and downtown city events.

The fireworks are also happening, with a new viewing location a train ride away.

Here’s what’s happening in the city.

Live events

The festivities this year include the Canada Day main stage at Prince’s Island Park.

Starting with the national anthem and a land acknowledgement at 2 p.m., the show features Micah Sage, Jamie Finer, Kardinal Offishal, Tia Wood, and Walk off the Earth as the last act at 8 p.m.

You can also head over to The Confluence for an Indigenous spotlight and powwow, an artisans market, food vendors, and to check out Tipis and Trappers’ tents.

Studio Bell is also celebrating 10 years at the National Music Centre and King Eddy at 10 a.m.

There are also festivities at Sien Lok Park, the Municipal Building, the Harry Hays green space, East Village, and Eau Claire Plaza.

You can find more information online here, and an interactive map also highlights the events in the city.

Canada Day fireworks

Capping off the festivities is the fireworks show at Stampede Park at 11 p.m.

A public viewing area is at the Max Bell Centre parking lot and the surrounding green space.

The city says the parking lot is only for viewing the fireworks, with no planned activities at the site, but amenities such as washrooms will be available.

Officials recommend guests take transit to the Franklin or Barlow/Max Bell LRT stations, which are both within walking distance.
