CALGARY – More concerns are being raised about the rapidly spreading COVID-19 Delta variant that originated in India.
Alberta’s top doctor Deena Hinshaw says there are multiple outbreaks at Foothills Medical Centre, and some of those infected were already vaccinated against the virus.

“We did see in one of the outbreaks that there were 10 individuals who completed their second dose and still, unfortunately, ended up becoming infected,” Hinshaw said.
“What we’re monitoring now, is whether or not they had—as we would expect—a milder course of illness.”
About 20 cases of the Delta variant have been confirmed in patients and staff at Foothills so far.

Hinshaw says the vaccines provide good protection against the Delta variant, but there will still be a small percentage of people who will become infected after being vaccinated.
“The vaccines are about 70 to 80 per cent protective after the first dose, and about 90 to 91/92 per cent after the second dose,” Dr. Hinshaw says. “So there still is a portion of people who can go on to become infected.”
The Delta variant was first identified in Alberta back in April.
