Alberta identifies 153 new COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations decrease to 255

CALGARY — Alberta identified 153 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.
The newly reported cases come after more than 6,700 tests were completed, giving the province a positivity rate of roughly 2.3 per cent.
There are now 2,639 active infections in Alberta. A decrease of 165 from Tuesday.

There were also an additional 50 variant cases identified on Wednesday, all of which were the B.1.1.7 strain.
Hospitalization numbers saw a drop, with 255 people now in hospital, a decrease of 16 people from the day prior. There are now 67 people in the ICU.
Four additional deaths were reported on Wednesday.

As for vaccination numbers, 43,754 vaccines were administered over the last 24 hours — 4,490 of which were first dose appointments.
Currently, 69.7 per cent of the eligible population in Alberta has received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. This puts the province just 0.3 per cent away from reaching the threshold needed to enter Stage 3 of the reopening plan.
