City looking to scale back adaptive roadways for Stage 3 of reopening

CALGARY — They’ve been a fun and safe way to get outside during the pandemic, but as we move into Stage 3 of reopening, the adaptive roadways set up in the city will be scaled back.

They could be seen on Memorial Drive and the lower deck of the Centre Street Bridge, as well as along Elbow Drive, Crescent Road, 50 Avenue S.W., and 12 Street S.E. giving Calgarians the space to walk, run and ride — ensuring they could keep their distance from others.

Now, once the province hits Stage 3 of its reopening plan, the City will be reopening the roadways during the week. But, there are plans to keep the adaptive roadways in place for the weekends.

Troy Macleod with the City’s Roads Department says they could also be looking at blocking traffic on Friday afternoons as well.

“Certainly this summer we are going to continue with weekend closures and provide that additional opportunity for people to go and cycle and enjoy the river pathway system including part of Memorial Drive, and so yes, it is something we are reviewing for the future,” he said.

Macleod says most of the adaptive roadways are slated for removal in the Fall, but others such as the ones in Cresent Heights, 12 Street S.E. and 50 Avenue S.W. will remain active all year.
