Kenney: Calgary’s continuing mask bylaw will create confusion

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — Premier Jason Kenney says it’s unfortunate Calgary won’t be dropping its mask mandate on July 1 like the province is doing.

Instead, city council will debate the issue at its next meeting on July 5 and could drop it that day or keep it until the end of July or even longer.

“I don’t think it’s helpful for different governments to adopt different and conflicting policies,” the premier said Wednesday. “I think that can only lead to confusion in the general public when what we need instead is clarity.”

“The Government of Alberta is following the expert advice of our chief medical officer, instead of following angry voices on Twitter.”

“I would encourage every municipality to respect the expert advice we have been receiving and not confuse the public but rather maintain consistency between provincial and municipal governments.”

Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi said it’s “insulting” to think people would be confused over different policies.

“I don’t think people are so dumb that they won’t know there is a difference in different cities. Certainly, it was like that all last summer, and we were fine. I have a lot of faith in citizens that they will understand and do what is right,” Nenshi said.

While the general masking rules will be lifted by the province on Canada Day, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw announced Tuesday, face coverings will be required in some healthcare settings, on public transit, inside taxies and rideshare services.
