CALGARY (660 NEWS) – The City of Calgary will be putting $147 million into the development of six capital recreation projects.
City council approved the investment on Friday.
The hope is these projects will increase recreation opportunities in some of Calgary’s underserved communities.
The projects and allocations include:
- $32 million for northeast regional field house at Skyview ranch.
- $25 million for northeast athletic park at Saddle Ridge.
- $14 million for northwest athletic park at Rocky Ridge
- $6 million for southeast air inflated structure at the Calgary Soccer Centre.
- $32 million for southwest regional fieldhouse at Belmont.
- $45 million for southwest twin arena development at Glenmore Athletic Park.
A capital investment plan was created earlier this year to help address some of the gaps in play and practice areas in new communities throughout the city.
It included addressing ageing infrastructure, service needs and equitable distribution. “I am so pleased council came together to make this generational investment that will address recreation gaps across our city,” Mayor Naheed Nenshi said.
“This will have a lasting impact, opening up new and much-needed sports and play opportunities for children and adults in our community,” he added.
“This is an investment in the collective health for our children, families and communities,” Ward 5 Coun. George Chahal said.
“Now is the time to invest in recreation as we emerge from a pandemic. It is a key to our collective recovery,” Chahal added.
The projects are slated for completion over the next few years with the last project open in 2027.
