Police charge man in connection to hate-motivated crime downtown

CALGARY – Police have charged a man following a hate-fueled attack on a woman downtown.

Investigators say around 9:30 p.m. on June 13, a woman went to collect a package from the lobby of her apartment building on 3 Ave S.W.

After grabbing her package, she was approached by a man who spewed a racist insult at her.

When the woman confronted him, he threatened to hurt her and then took off on a red bike.

After releasing photos of the suspect earlier this week, police say the suspect turned himself in.

The 30-year-old has been charged with uttering threats.

If he’s found guilty, any evidence of the threats being hate-motivated will be considered by the courts during sentencing.
