Ward 5 Councillor George Chahal to run for federal Liberal Party

CALGARY — Incumbent city councillor George Chahal is withdrawing his name as a municipal candidate for Ward 5 so he can run for the Liberal Party for Calgary-Skyview in the next federal election.
“I’ve been honoured to represent the residents of Ward 5 at City Hall since 2017,” Chahal said.
“These haven’t been easy years in Calgary. As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, our city needs strong leadership and representation at the federal level now more than ever.”

In a statement issued Thursday night, Chahal highlighted the importance of local representation in the years ahead.
“Northeast Calgary is growing rapidly. Our growing communities need substantial investment in services and infrastructure. As a born and raised Northeast Calgarian who has served in municipal government, I want to represent our diverse and under-served communities at the federal level and advocate for the investment needed to make life better for all Calgarians.”
There will now be nine city council seats vacant for the Oct. 18 municipal election.
While Mayor Naheed Nenshi says he won’t be endorsing anyone, he is excited to see Chahal running.
“He was been an outstanding city councillor, I’ve always said that it would be helpful if Calgary had people from different parties elected. It puts us more in play, federally, and it makes it easier for Calgary’s needs to get covered,” Nenshi said.”I’m really excited about his candidacy, and I wish him the best.”
