Man who died after CPS arrest remembered as loving family man, mentor

CALGARY – The family of a man who died following a police arrest is remembering Ramon “Will” Perez as a loving and devoted family man.

On July 8, police were called to Abalone Place about an incident involving the driver of a truck.

When police showed up, they found the driver who appeared to be intoxicated and they believed he was impaired.

During an interaction with the driver, force was used to place the man into custody.

After being placed under arrest, the driver complained about rib rain and was assessed by EMS before being released.

The man declined to be transported to hospital.

On July 12, the Medical Examiner’s Officer notified Calgary police that the man had died after attending hospital with chest pain.

The Perez family says it is shattered and confused over Will’s death.

“Will was an incredible husband to his wife Nichole, a cherished son and a treasured brother, nephew, cousin, uncle and friend,” writes the family in a statement.

“Our family is deeply distressed at the outcome of the police’s interactions with Will that night and are reeling from his untimely death. We are encouraged to hear of the immediate decision by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) to investigate the incident. Our simple request is that ASIRT complete a thorough and unbiased investigation.”

Perez radiated kindness and compassion, the family continues, adding he was a selfless coach and mentor who had a deep love of music and art.

“He took every opportunity to reach out to those he loved and improve their day. Will was a devoted husband and family man. His passing has sent shockwaves through our extended family and friends who loved him as their own,” reads the statement.

“These circumstances have robbed us of a piece of our hearts and we will never be the same without him.”

The family has asked for privacy as relatives mourn Perez’ passing.

An online fundraiser has been set up for his wife and has already raised over $10,000.
