MLA Devinder Toor fined $15k by Elections Alberta

CALGARY — Calgary-Falconridge MLA Devinder Toor is facing $15,000 in fines from Elections Alberta after it says Toor violated contribution and expense limits in 2018 and 2019 when he ran for UCP nomination, and then for the provincial election.

Elections Alberta says Toor violated the Election Finances and Contributions Disclosure Act by exceeding his expense limits, accepting prohibited donations and filing false financial statements, among other charges.

The alleged incidents happened both while he was running for the United Conservative Party in the Northeast riding, and when he was the party’s candidate in the provincial election in 2019.

Drew Westwater, is the deputy chief electoral officer with Elections Alberta, he says according to the records, this doesn’t happen too often.

“If you look on our website, we have a listing there of all the violations that have come to our attention in the last number of years,” Westwater says. “This is the only example of this particular issue from the last election.”

Elections Alberta says Toor broke a number of rules.

“Someone other than the CFO accepted contributions, he accepted a prohibited contribution from a numbered company here in Alberta, of which he is one of the principals,” Westwater claims. “He exceeded the spending limits that are allowed for a nomination contestant, and he filed a false financial statement.”
